Promotion is not mandatory; the pawn-bishop cannot remain as the pawn-bishop and the pawn-rook cannot remain as pawn-rook.

Two additional files are indicated by a combination of a letter and a number : "a0" and "h0".

Two additional ranks are indicated by the numbers : "0" and "9".

Each player controls four additional pieces:

two pawn-bishop (this piece is similar, but not identical to the ferz) and two pawn-rook (this piece is similar, but not identical to the wazir).
